Inky Black and Bamboo Green: A Unique Korean Restaurant Design

Bringing the Serenity of Bamboo Groves Indoors

The project by Chi Ching Ko and Pi Chu Wei transformed a commercial Korean restaurant space into a serene oasis inspired by bamboo groves.

The Inky Black and Bamboo Green restaurant design by Chi Ching Ko and Pi Chu Wei is a testament to the power of nature-inspired interiors. The project aimed to create a unique dining experience by incorporating bamboo, a key ingredient in Korean cuisine, into the design motif. The result is a space that exudes tranquility and elegance, transporting diners to a serene bamboo grove.

The designers extended the bamboo motif to various elements of the restaurant, starting with the reception counter. Bamboo cladding is used extensively throughout the exterior, creating a striking visual impact. Inside, freshly picked green bamboo adorns the reception area, further enhancing the connection to nature.

One of the standout features of the design is the use of angled black mirrors on the walls. These mirrors not only add a touch of sophistication but also serve as a reflection of the food on the tables, creating an intriguing visual effect for passersby. The designers also incorporated hidden lighting and cabling, along with decorative wall lamps and skylights, to create intimate and inviting spaces within the restaurant.

The first floor of the restaurant features black metal with bands of light, giving the space a sense of flow. L-shaped free-standing black mirrors between the hallway and dining areas rise up to the ceiling, framing the spatial axes and dining space. The tables and chairs are movable, allowing for flexibility in accommodating different numbers of diners. The warm tones of the timber elements help balance the coolness of the overall design.

On the second floor, the design theme is extended with an increase in illumination, creating a different spatial atmosphere. The layout is more spread out, providing a comfortable setting for diners. The designers have successfully leveraged the lines of movement and ambiance to achieve a balance between style and spatial function.

Not only is the Inky Black and Bamboo Green design visually stunning, but it also incorporates sustainable elements. Wood-wool cement boards made from compressed sawdust with sound-insulating qualities were installed on most interior walls, contributing to the reuse of waste resources. The design also maximizes the use of space, with creative additions such as a Japanese round table underneath the stairwell.

The Inky Black and Bamboo Green restaurant design by Chi Ching Ko and Pi Chu Wei is a testament to the power of nature-inspired interiors. By seamlessly integrating bamboo into the design motif, the designers have created a unique and tranquil dining experience. This project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019, recognizing its outstanding creativity and contribution to quality of life improvements.
